Understanding Tongue and Lip Ties

We’re currently welcoming new patients at both our Tupelo, MS and Pearl, MS locations.
A tongue tie, or restricted lingual frenum, is a condition where the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too tight or short, limiting proper movement. Similarly, a lip tie can restrict movement between the upper lip and gum. These issues fall under the category of tethered oral tissues (TOTs) and can interfere with:

  • Breastfeeding and bottle feeding
  • Proper tongue posture and rest
  • Speech development
  • Breathing and airway function
  • Dental and facial growth

These challenges may not always be obvious at first—but when present, they can disrupt early development and cause long-term complications if left untreated.

Hello, I’m Dr. Robert Thornton, DMD, and I specialize in helping infants and children overcome the challenges of tongue and lip ties. These conditions—also known as tethered oral tissues—can significantly impact your child’s ability to nurse, breathe, speak, and grow. As a parent, I know how overwhelming it can feel when your little one is struggling. That’s why I’m here—to guide, support, and empower you every step of the way.

This expansion allows me to bring my specialized care closer to families in Pearl, Jackson, Flowood, Brandon, and the surrounding communities who are looking for answers and lasting relief.

My Approach

Compassionate Care, Advanced Treatment

I offer gentle, laser-assisted frenectomies using the advanced LightScalpel® LS-1005 Laser System, which allows for precise tissue release with minimal discomfort and fast healing. This simple procedure takes just moments, but the benefits can be life-changing.

Before and after the procedure, I strongly recommend myofunctional therapy—think of it as physical therapy for the mouth. This helps retrain the tongue and oral muscles to function properly, supporting optimal healing and preventing reattachment. It’s an essential part of long-term success.

What You Can Expect:

  • A comprehensive evaluation of your child’s symptoms and needs
  • A quick, minimally invasive frenectomy (if needed)
  • Detailed guidance on wound care and healing exercises
  • Pre- and post-frenectomy myofunctional therapy for best outcomes
  • Ongoing support and education tailored to your family
