MAGO Therapy for TMJ Relief

MAGO Therapy for TMJ Relief in Tupelo, MS

If you believe you may be suffering from TMJ disorder, finding effective relief is essential. Persistent jaw pain, headaches, facial discomfort, and bite problems can make everyday activities difficult. At the office of Dr. Robert H. Thornton, patients have access to advanced treatment options designed to address the root cause of temporomandibular joint disorders.

One of the most effective solutions available today is MAGO Therapy (Maxillary Anterior Guided Orthotic) — a specialized treatment that helps restore proper jaw alignment and reduce TMJ symptoms without surgery.

What Is MAGO Therapy?

MAGO Therapy involves a custom orthotic device worn over the teeth that is carefully adjusted over time. These weekly adjustments allow the jaw joints to gradually move into their optimal resting position, which can significantly reduce strain on the temporomandibular joints.

This method provides an extremely precise way to determine the correct jaw alignment before creating a long-term treatment solution.

Once the jaw joints stabilize, the information gathered during therapy is used to design a custom oral splint or restorative plan that supports proper jaw function and long-lasting symptom relief.

MAGO Therapy is widely recognized as the only splint therapy scientifically proven to reduce symptoms of TMJ disorders.

Meet Dr. Robert H. Thornton

Hello, I’m Dr. Robert H. Thornton, and I’m passionate about helping patients achieve lasting relief from complex dental conditions.

While I enjoy all aspects of dentistry, I have dedicated much of my career to treating patients with TMJ disorders, bite problems, airway dysfunction, and facial pain.

My interest in these conditions is personal. Several members of my family—including myself—have experienced TMJ and airway dysfunction. That experience inspired me to pursue advanced training to better help patients suffering from similar challenges.

Early in my career, I recognized that many patients in North Mississippi were struggling with complex dental issues that required more advanced diagnostic and treatment approaches.

Advanced Training in Bioesthetic Dentistry

In 2008, I began a four-year journey to deepen my expertise in diagnosing and treating degenerating chewing systems and TMJ disorders.

I completed all four levels of training at The OBI Foundation for Bioesthetic Dentistry, becoming a Level 4 Graduate. Bioesthetic Dentistry focuses on restoring harmony to the teeth, jaw joints, and muscles through scientifically based principles.

In October 2022, I was honored to serve as a Board of Directors Officer for the OBI Foundation, collaborating with colleagues who share a commitment to advancing patient care.

This training allows me to provide highly specialized care for patients suffering from:

  • TMJ disorders (TMD)

  • Chronic headaches

  • Jaw pain and clicking

  • Muscle and facial pain

  • Bite problems

  • Degenerative jaw joint issues

Benefits of MAGO Therapy for TMJ Disorders

Many patients experience noticeable improvement within just a few weeks of beginning MAGO Therapy.

High Success Rate

MAGO Therapy can significantly reduce—and in some cases eliminate—debilitating TMJ symptoms such as jaw pain, headaches, and facial discomfort.

Precise Diagnosis

By stabilizing the jaw joints first, we can obtain a far more accurate diagnosis. Accurate diagnosis is critical for successful treatment.

Scientifically Proven

The MAGO splint is currently the only occlusal device scientifically proven to reduce TMD symptoms.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

Unlike surgical options, MAGO Therapy is non-surgical and minimally invasive, allowing patients to remain comfortable throughout the process.

Faster Relief Than Surgery

Surgical TMJ procedures can require months of recovery. Many patients undergoing MAGO Therapy begin experiencing improvement much sooner.

Biologic and Minimally Invasive Dental Treatment

Once the jaw joints are stabilized and an accurate diagnosis has been established, the next step is restoring the dental system to full health.

Your personalized treatment plan may include a combination of biologic and minimally invasive approaches designed to correct underlying issues while preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible.

The goal is always to:

  • Restore proper jaw function

  • Improve comfort and bite stability

  • Achieve long-lasting results

Every treatment plan is designed with a conservative approach, focusing on solutions that are both effective and sustainable.

When to See a TMJ Specialist

You may benefit from visiting a TMJ specialist if you experience symptoms such as:

  • Jaw pain or stiffness

  • Clicking or popping in the jaw

  • Chronic headaches or migraines

  • Facial pain or muscle tension

  • Difficulty opening or closing your mouth

  • Teeth grinding or bite changes

These symptoms often indicate an underlying temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) that requires specialized diagnosis and treatment.
